Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are a common and often painful condition, typically caused by a sharp edge or spike of nail pressing into the surrounding skin. This can lead to inflammation, swelling, and in some cases, infection.

Several factors can contribute to ingrown toenails, including biomechanics (the way you walk or stand), foot shape or deformities, poorly fitting footwear, and even the natural shape of the nail or improper nail trimming techniques.

If you're noticing any of these signs, especially if the area becomes increasingly painful or starts to look infected, it’s important to seek professional help. Early treatment can prevent further discomfort and complications.

Procedure

At SW Podiatry, we carefully resect the offending spike of nail to relieve pressure, reduce pain, and help the area begin to heal. Further advice and treatment options will be discussed to prevent recurrence and keep you comfortable on your feet.

How to spot it

  • Pain or tenderness along the edge of the toenail

  • Redness or swelling around the nail

  • Skin that feels warm or looks inflamed

  • A visible spike or curved edge digging into the skin

  • Pus or discharge if infection has developed

  • Difficulty wearing shoes or walking comfortably
