Moles and Lesions
Dermoscopy is a non-invasive skin examination technique that uses a specialised handheld device called a dermoscope to closely analyse the structure of moles, skin lesions, and other abnormalities beneath the skin’s surface. It helps clinicians detect early signs of conditions such as skin cancer, pigmentation disorders, and inflammatory skin diseases that may not be visible to the naked eye.
This tool provides a magnified, illuminated view of the skin, allowing for better-informed decisions about whether a lesion is harmless, needs monitoring, or should be referred for further investigation. Dermoscopy is quick, painless, and highly effective in supporting early diagnosis and peace of mind.
Procedure
At SW Podiatry, we use a professional-grade dermoscope to assess any skin concerns our patients may have - from unusual moles and discolouration to changing skin lesions or growths. Our dermoscope allows us to examine the skin in fine detail, and we can also capture high-quality images by connecting the device to a mobile phone.
This is particularly useful when a referral to your GP is needed, as we can include detailed photographs to support your case, making the referral process more efficient and informative. If you’ve noticed a skin change on your feet or lower limbs that’s concerning you, we’re here to assess it professionally and guide you through the next steps, if needed.
For moles or lesions you’re particularly worried about, we also offer access to Map My Mole - a fast, professional dermatology screening service. After a few quick questions about your skin, we’ll take detailed dermoscopic images of the area and securely share them with consultant dermatologists through Map My Mole. Your images are reviewed directly by a specialist, and you’ll receive a digital report with their findings and clear advice on the next steps — often within just a few days.
This service can help you skip lengthy NHS referral delays, giving you peace of mind and timely expert guidance from trusted dermatologists.
If you’re concerned about a mole or skin lesion, speak to us - early assessment makes all the difference.
